BREAKING NEWS: Vietnam Discovers "Earthquake Messenger" Fish Washed Ashore in Ninh Thuan Province
Vietnam: A so-called "earthquake messenger" fish, also known as an oarfish, measuring over 2 meters long, was discovered by local fishermen in Ninh Hai District, Ninh Thuan Province, Vietnam. According to video footage captured by the fishermen, the oarfish was found with its tail severed on a coastal beach in the province. Upon discovering the fish, the fishermen quickly released it back into the sea.
Vietnamese media reported that this ominous species was found on the morning of May 18. According to Mr. Chau, a local fisherman, the oarfish measured nearly 2 meters in length and was found with a broken tail. He further noted that such an occurrence is unprecedented in the village, as this type of fish is extremely rare and typically lives in deep ocean waters.
It’s important to note that in Japanese folklore, the oarfish is believed to be a harbinger of earthquakes or tsunamis. When they appear near the surface or wash ashore, they are seen as warning signs of seismic activity or potential natural disasters. However, there is currently no scientific evidence to support this belief.
Oarfish typically inhabit ocean depths ranging from 200 to 1,000 meters, dwelling in dark zones where sunlight rarely reaches. In 2011, shortly before the devastating Fukushima earthquake and tsunami that claimed over 20,000 lives in Japan, several oarfish were reported to have washed ashore along the Japanese coast. This incident reinforced the traditional Japanese belief that oarfish are connected to imminent earthquakes and tsunamis.
